I'm so useless at highlighting and I always have been! I think because i'm a pale little thing i've always worried about highlighting along with contouring as i'm never sure of what products to use and how to use them. Recently though i've been reaching into the stash and loving probably the easiest method of highlighting and getting a natural glow out there - the highlighter pen.
Nope, not those kind of highlighter pens from school, but instead following the lead of cult classic and beauty bestseller YSL Touche Eclat, lots of other brands from the world of makeup have since followed suit and made a bunch of awesome brush on highlighters in pen format for the ultimate useless girl, like me! First up I want to apologise for not including a high street version, there are a few kicking about and I was so confident I had the Bourjois Healthy Mix one but I could not find it anywhere!
So I immediately got to work on highlighting my face using these pens and it becomes apparent so quickly just how easy they are to use, and for so many years i've been getting it all wrong/trying to highlight in the most silly way when all along I could get a gorgeous glow from these pens alone! Here's how to do it:
Apply the pen on all the areas where the natural sunlight would bounce off your skin. So that will be under the eyes and a little bit down the cheeks, if you wish, as well as as along the top of the nose. Take it over underneath your eyebrows, as well as just gently kissing the top of your chin and then above your lips onto your cupids bow.
I think my fave out of the bunch is either the Estee Lauder Brush on Glow or the YSL Touche Eclat, just because both are a little more pink on my skintone. I love the Charlotte Tilbury Retoucher, but as it says on it it's definitely more of a concealer, so this one is more of an under eye concealer one rather than a highlighter as such, but still totally does the job. Charlotte describes it as the magic of the retoucher in pen form, and that's definitely what I would regard it as a bit more than a highlighter, but it works wonders in conjunction with your favourite highlighter pen!
The Smashbox one is a little different because it's actually quite sparkly. This is way more of a night out or real full on highlightery one for me and it's only something I whip out at nighttime, as it seems far too sparkly for every day use! It's also a tiny touch dark for me so I blend it with a bit of my foundation - worth noting for paleys!
Feeling like a fool right now for not knowing the beauty of highlighter pens for so long after dabbling in the Touche Eclat and getting it all wrong as a younger twenty-something! Come at me summer sun, i'm so ready for you! What's your fave highlighter pen?
